The history of plumbing traces back to early civilization, and likely had an effect on the growth of human civilization. The term plumber comes from the Latin word “plumbum,” which means lead. Pipes in the Roman Empire, in which Latin was spoken, were made of lead.
Modern plumbing uses non-toxic substances for pipes instead of lead. Plumbers today must have a wide range of knowledge and materials at his or her disposal. Many strict regulations ensure that modern plumbing is safe, which means that this type of tradesman must understand a complex set of rules to ensure that the population remains healthy. Plumbing deals with both the distribution of running water to populations as well as the safe removal of sewage from populations.
These professionals usually learn their trade through an apprenticeship under a trained practitioner in the field. There also exist schools where training can take place. The main concern in the practice of the trade today is the installation and removal of pipes. However, this requires a variety of skills that go beyond physically working with pipes. For example, the ability to read blueprints, drawings, and other forms of communication is essential to ensure that pipe systems work properly and meet safety regulations. There may need to be work done on a variety of pipe systems, at different levels of complexity, including industrial, commercial, and home plumbing.
Measurement and testing are important aspects of this trade. Safety is always an issue; therefore, precision and accuracy are traits that should be taken into consideration when measuring and cutting pipes. A thorough test of any pipe system should be carried out at the end of pipe installation or a repair and maintenance job. Many of these jobs involve systemic planning, but there are also emergencies in which plumbers must respond in a timely manner and repair the malfunctioning plumbing to prevent serious water damage. There are also minor jobs that involve repair and maintenance that are not emergencies, but still require a timely response to restore functionality to the plumbing of a building.
Plumbers perform a variety of repair and installation tasks. One common plumbing job is the installation of new water heaters and the removal and/or repair of malfunctioning water heaters. Plumbers can also repair toilets, install water softeners or other kind of water filters, including a reverse osmosis filter.
The work of a plumber is complicated and involves a variety of skills. They must undergo extensive training and can tackle a wide range of tasks. They respond to emergencies and also design elaborate pipe systems. Plumbers work with various materials and must also study current safety codes. As you can see, a professional plumber has many concerns, but without them, modern plumbing would not be possible.
